360 Total Security 5.2.0.1085

360 Total Security is a free antivirus program that removes and protects against viruses and various computer threats. It also acts as a powerful startup booster that does not only optimize your system but also shows you how long your computer takes to boot up.
Features:
  • System speedup
  • Virus scan
  • Junk cleanup
  • WiFi security check
  • Downloaded file scan
  • Malicious website blocking
  • Online shopping protection
  • Malicious behavior blocking
  • Scan file when saved
The program integrates five award-winning virus engines to offer the best protection, namely 360 Cloud Scan, System Repair, QVMII AI, BitDefender and Avira Antivir engines.
Using 360 Total Security
As soon as we had installed 360 Total Security quickly and without a hitch, the antivirus launched and displayed the message: “Your computer has not been examined yet” on a tabbed user interface that prominently displayed the “Examine” button.
Many antivirus programs take a rather long time during the initial scanning, but 360 Total Security took just about a minute to complete the whole process from the Start tab. When we checked our system for viruses from the Virus Scan tab and selected full scan, the process took about half an hour.
That was due to the fact that we had opted to scan all files, including compressed ones, under Settings. During that time, it scanned 135,848 files, some of which were more than 100 MB. We could also choose either quick or custom scan. We also allowed the program to indicate bootup time after booting and the various ways we wanted the antivirus to protect our computer.
The Speedup tab includes two options: easy speedup and bootup time. Under easy speedup, the program listed unnecessary startup programs that we could disable to shorten the time the computer took to boot, which we could monitor under the bootup time option. 360 Total Security is an intuitive startup booster that allows you to monitor its performance.
The cleanup tab allowed us to choose areas we wanted to scan from among:

  • Cache files generated by Windows 8 Modern
  • Cache files generated while browsing the Internet
  • Junk files produced by watching videos and listening to music
  • Application junk files
  • Windows system junk files
  • Cache files generated by phone utilities The program provides the option to select all, deselect all or let it select recommended areas, which is can come in handy when a user does not know what to choose.
    Conclusion
As its name indicates, 360 Total Security is a free antivirus that provides total security, from local protection of computers against viruses to Internet protection during online transactions. One of the things we liked about the software was its simplicity of use. We could perform one-click cleanup to make our computer function at its optimum level.

Microsoft Security Essentials (32-Bit) 4.6.0305.0

If you have not yet upgraded to Windows 8 and want a free antivirus program, then you may consider Microsoft Security Essentials. The program scans for different types of threats, including viruses, spyware, worms, Trojans and rootkits among others. Windows 8 has an enhanced security program built in, which is known as Windows Defender.
Features:
  • Three scan modes
  • Some advanced scan settings
  • Automatic spyware and virus definitions
  • Shell extension
  • Scan scheduler
Using Microsoft Security Essentials
You must have a genuine copy of Windows to install the security software, and the process takes some time. The program asks users to uninstall other antivirus tools to avoid software conflict.
The user interface has a simple layout with four tabs marked Home, Update, History and Settings respectively. Although the software is considered “baseline” even by the makers, it has some advanced settings. Its color theme changes depending on the way it rates a system’s safety level, with green, yellow and red respectively indicating full protection, potential threats and risky activity.
In the Home tab, we could determine whether the virus and spyware definitions were up to date and real-time protection was either on or off. That was where we could also choose Quick, Full or Custom scan. When we made our choice and pressed the “Scan now” button, the program displayed start and elapsed times, scan type, a progress bar, and scanned items, including the name of the file currently being scanned.
The program displayed a pop-up dialog box when it detected something malicious, which showed the name of the malicious agent, alert level, status and action it recommended. If you want to get more information, then you need to log in at the Microsoft website.
We could filter the History list to display only allowed files or quarantined ones apart from showing all detected items. The Settings tab allowed us to schedule the type of scan we wanted the program to perform automatically every day at a specified time. We could also define the action we wanted it to perform without prompting us. It performs weekly auto-scans by default.

Although the virus and spyware definitions are updated automatically when you are connected to the Internet, you may also initiate the process whenever you want.

Panda Cloud Cleaner 1.0.107

While it is recommended that you install a local antivirus program on your computer, it is also a good idea to have another one that operates in the cloud. One major benefit of using an online antivirus is the assurance of always receiving the latest protection. One such program is Panda Cloud Cleaner. The free antivirus software remotely checks computers against malicious applications.
Using Panda Cloud Cleaner
Installing the desktop version of Panda Cloud Cleaner was relatively straight forward because all we needed to do was follow the clear on-screen instructions. The antivirus offered to perform a quick scan after installation, which checked the areas most commonly infected by viruses.
We could also perform a full scan to check every part of our computer. In addition, the program allowed us to configure folders we wanted it to scan.
If you want to get maximum protection, then you need an Internet connection, as the antivirus relies heavily on cloud knowledge. However, it also includes a local antivirus engine that makes it possible to detect serious threats even without going online. The program does not offer real time protection.
The quick scan was as quick as its name implied. However, processing some information and returning the results of detection took significant time because it had to connect to the online database.
The program cleverly integrates advanced tools with simplicity of use, which makes it ideal for both novice and advanced users. Some of the things we could do with it included:
  • Unlocking files that malware use to enable manual deletion
  • Terminating all processes that the system did not need to operate
  • Sending suspicious but yet unclassified data to Panda labs
  • Performing trusted boot scan to detect rootkits and stop viruses from preventing disinfection
  • Ability to delete temporary files that Web browsers usually leave behind

The program allowed us to select the files we wanted to delete.
